Successfull European Distance Learning Week

EDEN, die European Distance and E-Learning Network, successfully organised the first European Distance Learning Week on 7-11 November.

Five webinars with 354 registered participants were held. The participants came from 41 different countries including 15 countries from outside Europe from Canada to Brazil, from South Africa to Nepal, encompassing all 4 continents (Europe, Asia, Africa, America) and demonstrating a strong geographical coverage and a substantial outreach.

123 participants eventually turned up. 27 facilitators contributed to the successful implementation of this initiative, among them representatives of the European Commission and the Lifelong Learning Platform. EDEN thanks the valuable contribution of the facilitators and hope that this initiative successfully contributed to the European dialog about the present state and the future of open and distance learning. All participants and facilitators received EDEN open badges for their contribution.

The presenters’ slides can be viewed on EDEN’s SlideShare page.

Research Workshop on Distance Education

Research into distance education has renewed importance and taken on new dimensions, as open, distance, and online learning further merge with the mainstream of education. Changes are occurring at all levels of institutions: from new systems and theories and ways of leading and managing organizations, to new teaching and learning approaches and technologies.

The European Distance and E-Learning Network will hold their 9th research workshop in Oldenburg, Germany from 4 to 6 October 2016.

Re-Imagining Learning Environments

Our current age has been framed by the concept of the ‘information age’. Sometimes also known as the ‘computer age’. In a networked society as ours, digital technology has touched and changed many aspects of day-to-day life.  For example, many long-standing societal, business and institutional systems have either lost their relevance or have transformed beyond recognition, the music, banking and travel industries being excellent examples. Education does not stand untouched and we observe emerging and declining paradigms, changing expectations from society, our students now framed as consumers, with new and emerging types of informal learning experiences (take MOOCs for example) and all too frequently operating in unstable economic and policy environments.

The 25th EDEN conference on distance education will be in Hungary from 14 - 17 June 2016.

Distance Learning: Hit Out Of The Park!

The United States Distance Learning Association's 2016 National Conference will be held at Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark Hotel, St. Louis, MO. Save the date: May 10-12, 2016. The United States Distance Learning Association was the first nonprofit Distance Learning association in the United States to support Distance Learning research, development and praxis across the complete arena of education, training and communications. In 1987, the USDLA was founded on the premise of creating a powerful alliance to meet the burgeoning education and training needs of learning communities via new concepts of the fusion of communication technologies with learning in broad multidiscipline applications.

Egalitarian Education

"Online Education can […] be extremely egalitarian, but it is egalitarian in a funny way. It can catapult the smart, motivated, but nonelite individuals over the members of the elite communities. [… A] good education no longer relies on living near a major city."

Conference: Open Discovery Space: Transforming schools into innovative learning organisations

EDEN and Ellinogermaniki Agogi will co-organise a three-day international conference in September 2015 in Athens.

The event will be earmarked as the next occasion in the EDEN Open Classroom Conference series with the involvement and support of thematically significant EU co-funded projects. The Conference incorporates the final event of the Digiskills project, a European project demonstrating ways to involve school communities in innovative teaching and learning practices, and empower teachers and trainers to use, share and exploit unique resource. The timing will also make several of the conference activities the first steps in the sustainability of the Open Discovery Space project, one of the ever-largest EU co-funded educational networking initiative.

The hosting projects will utilise their teacher communities and resources in the interest of a professional event, offering free training opportunities and promoting their best teaching practices. The trainings provided will be acknowledged by certifications. Based on its continuing success, the EDEN "Synergy" strand will be weaved into the programme in Athens as well, adding a "project magnet" effect to the conference and enabling new partnerships to be created and old ones to be strengthened and expanded, thanks to the active participation of a diverse audience.

The language of the conference is English, where necessary, translation is provided.
